How long will therapy take?
Doesn't my insurance cover Therapy & counseling?
Affordable therapy means different things to different people
People usually start therapy during a crisis, or some last-straw scenario. This means, people haven't really planned ahead for the costs involved, and find themselves selling their mental well-being to the lowest bidder (ie people who accept their insurance, etc) and "I can't afford it" is a common barrier keeping people paralyzed, feeling unable to get help.
What is the cost of NOT doing therapy? Losing your job? A nasty break-up or divorce? Continuing family conflict?
Because of how therapy is portrayed in the media, people think of the outdated psychoanalysis model of psychotherapy- lying on a couch, talking about the past for sessions three times a week for 20 years. While there are plenty of therapists who are happy to take your money for years and years, we are not them. We offer modern, evidence-based style of therapy with the goal of measuring the progress we make to make our work together as cost-effective as we can.
We are happy to offer a sliding scale for therapy for clients engaged in weekly therapy sessions. (You can request a sliding scale rate when you request an appointment with us by clicking the Book Now button below). Many of our staff have a limited number of sliding scale slots available, but we are sure we can work out a rate that you can afford.
Although our rates for therapy in NYC are already far below what many other practices charge for counseling, we offer a range of sliding scale slots in our caseloads to help make your search for the best therapist a little bit easier.
We have tried to make our services accessible to as many people as we can. We sometimes have a waiting list for sliding scale slots, but contact us through this site or book a therapy session and request a sliding scale rate.
Interested in a package rate? Talk to your therapist about the different pre-pay packages we have available. It would be great to be able to offer free therapy - but alas getting a masters degree, post-masters training, running a business, paying rent, etc means we have to charge for our highly specialized services like everyone else.
Therapy can be affordable!
We start working 45 minutes (with a few minutes to check in on any administrative issues like scheduling), once a week for the first month or two, measuring your progress the entire way while working to get you coming in less and less. After 6-8 sessions of weekly visits, we will check in to see if you're ready to to every other week. This means you're becoming more and more resilient!
For couples, we begin seeing you as individuals, then alternate between individual sessions one week and couples session the next.
We do not work with clients longer than one year. After working with your therapist for one year, we are happy to refer you to one of our colleagues, or outside of our practice. We do this to make sure we're making the most of our work together to get you better, not just get you depending on therapy. While we cannot fix something in one session that has developed over the course of years, we do want to show you making improvements sooner than later.
Insurance is meant to cover treatments for an illness. Clinicians have to assign an identified patient, then give that person a mental illness diagnosis in order to submit claims to your insurance. Once you have been treated for this mental illness, it becomes a pre-existing condition, which insurance companies no longer have to cover. Insurance does not cover couples therapy or sex therapy.
Everyone wants to keep costs down, and that's why we are happy to work out a sliding scale fee when we have slots available. We currently have slots available starting at $75 per person per session, let’s see how we can make it work.
